Last night Jon Huntsman appeared on Jay Leno. As I watched the interview, I could not help think that the GOP missed an opportunity to nominate someone with the experience, temperament and policy vision to be a great president. And, as I have said many times, what the Republican party needs more than ever is a successful turn at the wheel or it may face a long period in the political wilderness.
Two things in particular struck me. One was Jay Leno saying that he basically agrees with the GOP on fiscal and defense issues but doesn't care for their stances on social issues. I believe that most Americans agree with Leno and the Republican party losing lots of voters like him by insisting on indulging activists whose social views are more in line with the 19th century than the 21st century.
Second, Huntsman mentioned the possibility of a third party rising and ending the Democrat/Republican duopoly. Might Huntsman consider an independent run in the future???? We will see. In the meantime enjoy the interview. I certainly did.
