Kermit Gosnell Is A Preview Of What Will Happen If Abortion Is Outlawed

Gosnell at his arrest
When did the conservative movement become such a Whine Fest? Gone are the days of the Happy Warrior. The Iron Lady. Now is just a non stop cycle of whining, complaining and wallowing in victimhood. Grrr..

One of the favorite conservative complaints is that the mainstream media is constantly conspiring against them. The MSM - as it is known in the right wing blogosphere -  "hides" stories that hurt their liberal agenda and "pumps up" the volume on stories that cast an unflattering light on conservatives. The latest example - according to conservatives - of the media purposefully ignoring a story is the case of Dr. Kermit Gosnell.

Of course, a quick Internet search shows that the story has been covered by AP, CNN and several other outlets. Nevertheless, it hasn't received the heavy coverage as in other sensational trials. Kirsten Powers lamented in her column,"The deafening silence of too much of the media, once a force for justice in America, is a disgrace."  But then again, based on the outcomes of the OJ Simpson and the Casey Anthony trials, media coverage doesn't necessarily translate into justice. Or at least what public opinion perceived to be justice.

The allegation by conservatives is that the Gosnell story is not being covered because it is an argument against the pro-choice position. Pro-lifers really believe that Gosnell's clinic of horrors could be a watershed moment. I read earlier tonight a post where it was suggested that the Gosnell story may very well dramatically move opinion polls in favor of the pro-life position. Conservatives are genuinely excited about the potential of this story. But then again, they were genuinely excited about the long lines at Chick Fil A.

Alas for conservatives, the Gosnell story is not about abortion. Pennsylvania law prohibits abortions after 24 weeks of gestation unless it is "necessary to preserve life of mother or prevent serious risk of substantial and irreversible impairment of bodily function." The allegations against Gosnell are that he delivered viable babies and then killed them. He is facing eight counts of murder in the deaths of a female patient and seven babies.

If anything this case illustrates what will happen if abortion is outlawed. Women will be forced again to turn to unscrupulous doctors or other individuals who are only interested in making a profit. If abortion is illegal again, women will not report abuses for fear of being prosecuted for seeking an abortion. And many women will die as they did prior to Roe v. Wade.
