He added, "What is most frustrating is that the United States came very close to getting its foreign policy right. During the Carter administration, Americans had come to accept that the Soviet Union was here to stay. Then, Ronald Reagan entered the White House and we regressed to our old ways of trying to spread democracy around the world."
In an exasperated tone, he continued, "Look what is happening in Ukraine today. If only Reagan had left the Soviet Union intact, we would not have to worry about Crimea, Georgia and who knows what other future crises stemming from our unwise, unjust war against communism."
He scoffed at any suggestion that he was indirectly supporting communism. "Of course, I don't support communism. I love liberty. I am a libertarian; but as such I don't believe it is my job to promote freedom and human rights."
